A press release released today confirms rumors that Mark Webb will direct the next Spider-Man movie, replacing Sam Rami who directed the previous three. The new movie will relaunch the entire franchise. From what the studios are saying the plot will basically be a 'coming of age' story, but with super powers. In other words, a live-action version of the current Spider-Man cartoon.
Personally, I don't see the point of re-booting the franchise. Sure the third movie sucked, but they could easily just ignore it and keep on going. I can see Webb's version now: all angst and no action...staring the cast of High School Musical.
